 DIZZYDIDDY+PLUS FACE OF THE WEEK

Interview with Taquirah

Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you do?
Hi, I’m Taquirah. I’m a multifaceted artist—I sing, write, choreograph, and act.

What inspired you to pursue your career or business?
When I was in sixth grade, I started praise dancing and formed a special bond with my dance teacher, Santricia Dean. She encouraged me to pursue performing and gave me opportunities to lead in ministry, which taught me the value of working with other artists and giving back. Having a group of women who encouraged me to express myself gave me the confidence to pursue music.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career/business and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge has been not letting finances stop me from creating. Despite the difficulties, I never allowed financial limitations to prevent me from pursuing my art. In this industry, you have to have unwavering faith, and I believe that my faith in God has kept me going, even when things were tough.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I stay motivated by being inspired, vulnerable, and willing to share my journey. Many people are inspired, but not everyone is willing to be vulnerable enough to share their experiences. I allow myself to feel and express what inspires me without judgment, which keeps me focused and aligned with my goals.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career/business journey so far?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is not to wait for money. Do it broke—because the resources, the people, and the opportunities will come if you keep pushing forward.

How do you define success?

Success, for me, is being able to take care of my grandparents and mom through what I’ve built. I also want to travel and be highly paid for sharing my story and connecting with people without barriers. These are the things that define success in my eyes.

What is your biggest dream, and how are you working towards achieving it?
My biggest dream is to be highly paid for my creations. I’ve done so much for free and for love that now I’m focused on turning my passion into a sustainable career that I can pass down to future generations. I want to spend my time sharing my art and being valued for it.

How has your faith or spirituality played a role in your career/business?
My faith in God keeps me persistent. There are days when I feel torn, tired, or scared, but I know that without God, I wouldn’t have my gift, and without faith, I wouldn’t have the strength to keep going despite the many “no’s” I’ve encountered along the way.

Who is your biggest inspiration, and why?
Diana Ross is my biggest inspiration! She embodies grace and strength. She seamlessly fused different art forms, and any R&B singer would be deeply inspired by her legacy.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Honestly, this is something I’m still working on. I’m a workaholic, but I’m blessed with friends who not only celebrate my wins but also check in on me and ask how I’m doing. It’s a blessing to have people who care about my mental health, not just my accolades.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
Just do it. Don’t wait for the perfect time—there’s no such thing!

What is something that people often misunderstand about your work/business?
Many people think it’s easy or that it requires less effort than a regular 9-5 job. But being an artist is often a 24-hour job—you have to be willing to miss parties and important events to dedicate yourself fully to your craft.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work/business?
The most rewarding part of my work is connecting with people I’ve never met before. Music allows me to share experiences and emotions, and having someone relate to my story through my art is a beautiful feeling.

What is something that you’re passionate about outside of your work/business?
I’m passionate about movement and dance. Dance is actually how I got into music, and I just love performing!

What is the most valuable skill you have learned in your career/business?
My writing ability is something I truly cherish. The ability to tell a story and connect with people through words is a blessing.

What is something you wish you knew when you were just starting out in your career/business?
I wish I had known more about the business side of the industry, especially marketing. Many of the blessings I’ve received have come from God, faith, and persistence, but understanding marketing would have helped me advance even further.

How do you deal with failure or setbacks?
I see setbacks as opportunities to re-evaluate and grow. Every setback pushes me to the next level I’m trying to reach. I compare life to a trampoline—you have to go down to bounce higher.

What is your philosophy in life?

My philosophy is to embrace growth. Success is not linear, and I always remind myself that every setback is just preparing me for a higher leap.

What is that one life lesson that you learned a little too late?
I feel like I’m still learning and growing in my industry.

What is one thing that you have accomplished that you’re most proud of?
I’m really proud of my consistency and persistence!

How do you see yourself and your business/career evolving in the future?
I see myself becoming one of the most successful and hardworking artists in the industry. I have so many hidden talents that I’m excited to share, and I’m ready to bloom and bring my ideas to life!

How do you give back to your community or make a positive impact in the world?
One of the ways I give back is by teaching. I used to teach ballet and contemporary dance to kids aged 3-15. Many of my former students have gone on to attend top art schools, and it fills me with pride knowing I’ve contributed to their growth and success.

What is your biggest regret in life?

I don’t regret anything.

Do you have a favorite quote? What is it?
I don’t have a favorite quote, but I live by the Bible verse Proverbs 18:16—“A man’s gift makes room for him.” It’s something I affirm daily.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to be myself. The right people will understand my mission.

How do you stay innovative and adapt to changing circumstances in your field?
I stay innovative by being open. I understand that I can’t control every trend or platform, so I stay adaptable and open to exploring new opportunities. Social media, for example, has been a game-changer for me, connecting me with brands and people globally. I don’t get discouraged by views or obsessed with going viral—I just go with the flow and embrace the opportunities that come my way.
