The movie was filled with action, stunts, and power. The creator of the movie, Calvert David Miles created the film after reading an article about an African slave that was bought by a Japanese warlord and trained to be a samurai in feudal Japan. After reading the article Calvert wondered why Hollywood or anybody else, for that matter hasn’t told the story. His sister even mentioned that they are related to a famous Cuban war general Antonio Maceo, and Calvert wondered if his ancestry was Yasuke. From that point on Calvert wrote a treatment for “YASUKE Descendents” and his writing partner Marcus Day wrote the screenplay.

Once the movie premiered we asked Calvert how he was able to get his cast and crew prepared for all the amazing stunts. He said “Like myself, most of the cast and crew are Stuntmen so it was easy to find people that are incredibly good at fighting and producing incredible action sequences.” Calvert also stated how he felt after watching the film on the big screen:

“Like a sense of accomplishment and a weight has been lifted off my shoulders . It was really cool and fun to see everybody’s reaction to four years of hard work and dedication on the silver screen.”

Photographer: Albert Ortega/Getty Images

Calvert David Miles is from the southside of Chicago where he grew up with his mom Cherise, and Sister Melissa. He idolized martial artists like Wesley Snipes, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet li, and Jason David Frank the green ranger from Mighty Morphine Power Rangers. From there he knew he had to be a martial artist. At the age of 4 Calvert started his karate journey and pretty much never stopped.

Growing up he loved playing basketball, but always had an interest in filmmaking. In college, he took his first acting class and got bit by the acting bug. Calvert knew that Basketball wasn’t going to be his future, but acting and filmmaking were. So all the free time he had went to going to the movie theaters and researching different cameras to use for filmmaking. But sadly in 2013 Calvert’s mom Cherise passed away. He said he will never forget their last conversation was about moving to Los Angeles and being in the film industry. So In 2014 Calvert moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, California to pursue his and his mom’s dreams of being in the movie business.

Calvert David Miles & Wesley Snipes

Calvert mentioned that the next phase in this films process of “YASUKE Descendents” is to put it on streaming platforms and possibly a theatrical release. He is currently working on creating his own film distribution company so he will be able to create and distribute any film project that he wants. Calvert said:

“A lot of people in this film industry tend to wait and hope that their film gets picked up or distributed. I’d rather create every opportunity I have and not wait for someone else to give me a chance that I can give myself.

Calvert has a strong passion for this industry and creating new work. We asked him what keeps him going throughout his journey and he said “My my mom Cherise and sister Melissa coming to Hollywood when I was in the eighth grade and having the best time ever. Also the training that Chad Stahelski (owner of 8711 entertainment and director of John Wick) and Kim Do Nguyen (stunt and fight coordinator) gave me, to continue to create and push the boundaries of Martial Arts Cinema.

Calvert is also working on future projects titled Sister Soldiers, starring Jessica Graie and Nkechi Okonkwo. And yes, there will be a sequel to Yasuke Descendents.

YASUKE Descendents trailer

YASUKE Descendents had its world premiere at the famous Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and it was a packed house.
